Welding with Contact Lenses

I’m not supposed to wear my contacts for certain things… is it safe to weld with contact lenses?

Contact Lenses and Welding

Welding Safety ProductsThere are occupations where contact lenses are not recommended, such as woodworking, fine metal grinding, and other industries where dust particles are likely to get into your eyes. During welding, however it is perfectly safe to wear contact lenses, provided you are wearing the proper safety equipment.

We recommend that you wear a pair of ANSI Z87 approved safety glasses under your hood if you are welding with contact lenses. If you are wearing goggles, they should be enough to keep your eyes safe while you work.

It is a myth that your contact lenses can be fused to your eyes during a welding mishap, so if you’ve heard that, rest assured that you won’t have to worry about that ever happening.

If you’re considering welding with contact lenses, here’s what you need to know:

  • It is safe to weld with contact lenses on, but it is a good idea to wear a pair of ANSI Z87 approved safety glasses if you are working with a hood.
  • It is safe to wear contacts while doing torchwork if you’re wearing goggles.
  • Welding with contact lenses does not put you at risk of having the contacts fuse to your eyes. That is a myth.
  • Welding is an activity that requires the use of safety equipment. It is important that you wear appropriate safety equipment while welding, regardless of whether you’re wearing contacts. Contacts do not make your eyes safer while welding.
  • Welding with contact lenses is better than welding with no corrective eyewear if you need it. You need to be able to see what you’re doing! Just make sure your eyes are safe from debris or particles that you may produce while working, by wearing ANSI Z87 approved safety glasses.

Welding with contacts is safe and generally better than welding with no prescription eyewear, if you need it. We recommend doing what you need to to make sure that no particles get into your eyes, though, especially if you’re doing any grinding.
